Common Eye Symptoms

Changes in your pet's eyes can be irritating, may affect vision, and in some cases are an indicator of a greater health concern. Signs that your pet may be having problems with their eyes include:

  • Eye discharge

  • Red eyes

  • Diseases affecting the tissues around the eye, including the eyelids, conjunctiva, and even dental disease, can cause symptoms that affect the eye

  • Squinting

  • Cloudy eyes

  • Visual trouble, such as reluctance to enter a dark room, tripping, or walking into furniture

Veterinary Ophthalmology Expertise at Bay Area Pet Hospital

We work alongside your primary care veterinarian to treat your pet’s eye disease. This involves evaluation of your pet for advanced ocular examination, diagnostics, and/or surgical procedures.

Many common ophthalmologic diagnostics and procedures may be scheduled with our hospital, including:

  • Surgical removal of blind and painful eyes

  • Corneal Debridement and bandage contact placement

  • Eyelid surgery for entropion, ectropion, and eyelid tumor removal

  • Cherry Eye and third eyelid surgery

  • Evaluation of the glaucomatous eye

  • Retinal function testing via Electroretinography

  • Imaging of the orbit and globe with ultrasound

  • Subconjunctival and intravitreal injections

  • Conjunctival and orbital biopsy

  • Companion Animal Eye Registry [CAER] certification exams (aka OFA/Cerf Exams)

**Patients requiring intraocular surgery or corneal grafting may have an in-house consultation with the ophthalmologist prior to scheduling their surgical procedure at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services.

Meet Dr. Alex Schenk

Dr. Alex Schenk is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology. He is a Michigan native and received his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University. His rotating internship was completed in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and his residency training in Tampa, Florida. Although he is passionate about all aspects of ophthalmology, his special interests include corneal grafting and transplantation, cataract surgery, and exotic animal ophthalmology.
